Quick answer

The best route for 10 days · 9 nights

Start with four nights in Cape Town, spend one in Stellenbosch, then use Wilderness and Plettenberg Bay as two-night coastal bases. Finish at George airport if suitable flights are available. This is a Cape-and-coast trip; it does not include Johannesburg, Kruger, or a rushed safari detour.

Cape Town deserves several days before the road trip begins. That creates room to move the mountain outing around the weather and to give the peninsula a full day of its own.

The coastal section works best with time to stop. The plan has one longer transfer from the Winelands to Wilderness, then shorter moves. Confirm your one-way car rental and flights out of George before booking hotels.

Why this route works

  • Four Cape Town nights give weather-dependent sightseeing a second chance.
  • Two coastal bases avoid packing and unpacking every morning.
  • George is a practical return point for this route without extending all the way to the Eastern Cape.

Day by day

The complete 10 days itinerary

1

Day 1 · Cape Town

Arrive in Cape Town

Arrange an airport transfer, check in, and keep the afternoon near your accommodation. A waterfront meal and an early night are enough after a long flight.

  1. Cape Town arrival
  2. Hotel check-in
  3. Waterfront dinner
2

Day 2 · Cape Town

Use a clear day for the mountain

If weather and operations allow, make Table Mountain the main outing. Keep the afternoon for a neighborhood walk or museum rather than another distant attraction. Swap this day with the next city day if visibility is poor.

  1. Table Mountain
  2. City lunch
  3. One neighborhood

Good to know: Check live operating conditions before leaving; a booking does not guarantee weather.

3

Day 3 · Cape Town

Spend the day on the peninsula

Make a peninsula loop with a driver or rental car, allowing time for Cape Point and a stop around Simon’s Town. Choose stops according to daylight and traffic rather than trying to tick off every beach.

  1. Cape Point
  2. Simon’s Town
  3. Cape Town return
4

Day 4 · Cape Town

Keep a flexible Cape Town day

Visit Kirstenbosch or choose a city museum and a relaxed lunch. This day also gives the mountain another chance if earlier conditions were unsuitable. Confirm the next morning’s car collection and onward route.

  1. Kirstenbosch or museum
  2. Lunch
  3. City evening
5

Day 5 · Stellenbosch

A short move into the Winelands

Drive to Stellenbosch and settle in before exploring the town. Book a local driver or organized outing if wine tasting is part of your afternoon; the car is for the transfer, not a tasting circuit.

  1. Stellenbosch check-in
  2. Town walk
  3. Booked local outing
6

Day 6 · Wilderness

Drive to Wilderness

Treat the eastbound drive as the day’s main activity. Stop for meals and breaks, arrive before dark, and keep any shoreline walk short. Do not add a major inland detour to this transfer.

  1. Winelands departure
  2. Road breaks
  3. Wilderness check-in
7

Day 7 · Wilderness

Waterways and forest

Choose an open park trail or a locally operated water outing, depending on conditions and your abilities. Leave the afternoon for the village and a scenic stop rather than a second long drive.

  1. Wilderness park outing
  2. Village lunch
  3. Coastal viewpoint
8

Day 8 · Plettenberg Bay

Knysna on the way to Plettenberg Bay

Move east with a pause around Knysna’s waterfront or viewpoints. Continue to your next base and spend the afternoon settling in. Keep the day light enough that the stop remains enjoyable.

  1. Knysna
  2. Plettenberg Bay check-in
  3. Local dinner
9

Day 9 · Plettenberg Bay

Tsitsikamma as the main outing

Visit the Storms River Mouth area when access and weather allow. Choose a walk suited to current trail conditions and return with daylight to spare. Forest and coastal activities may close during severe weather.

  1. Storms River Mouth
  2. Open coastal walk
  3. Plettenberg Bay return
10

Day 10 · George

Depart through George

Drive back toward George with a generous margin for fuel, rental return, and check-in. Choose a later flight when possible; add a George night if your flight would require a rushed early transfer.

  1. George transfer
  2. Car return
  3. Airport

Before you go

Make the plan dependable

Confirm the transport triangle

Check Cape Town arrival, George departure, and one-way car availability together. If the flight home requires a separate domestic ticket, consider an overnight before the international leg.

Plan the drives in daylight

Ask your accommodation for current local approach advice, park securely, and avoid leaving bags visible in the vehicle. Keep the long transfer day free of timed activities.

Watch the park notices

Wind, rain, and flooding can affect the mountain, forest trails, and water activities. Use SANParks notices to choose that day’s outing and retain a town-based alternative.

Make it yours

Useful variations

One week

Stay in Cape Town and the Winelands, or cut the city stay and choose just one coastal base. Do not try to preserve every stop by driving late each evening.

Add a safari separately

Add several nights and choose the reserve and onward airport first. A safari adds its own arrival times and logistics; it is not a casual extra on this ten-day route.

FAQ

Common planning questions

Does this cover all of South Africa?

No. The itinerary stays around Cape Town and the southern coast. Johannesburg, Kruger, Durban, and the wider country are separate trips.

Do I need a car?

Independent travel along this particular route is easiest with a rental car. A prearranged driver or guided itinerary is an alternative; do not assume city-style transport will cover each coastal outing.

Should I fly home from Cape Town instead?

That is possible, but add a return travel day or domestic flight and check connection buffers. Do not attach the entire coastal return drive to an early international departure.
