Quick answer

The best route for 7 days · 6 nights

Spend two nights in Edinburgh without a car, then drive to Glencoe for one night, Portree or central Skye for two, and Inverness for one. Fly home from Inverness when possible. The route gives Skye a complete day, avoids a marathon Edinburgh-to-Skye push, and keeps every scenic driving day short enough to absorb weather and single-track delays.

A seven-day Scotland trip works when the Highlands are treated as a landscape journey rather than a checklist of castles and photo stops. The A82, Skye roads, and loch routes take longer than their mileage suggests, especially when weather changes or popular car parks fill.

This itinerary delays the rental car until Edinburgh is finished, breaks the westbound drive in Glencoe, and protects two nights on Skye. It finishes in Inverness so the trip does not spend its final day racing all the way back to Edinburgh.

Why this route works

  • Edinburgh is walkable and well served by transit, so the car begins only when the Highland route begins.
  • A Glencoe overnight keeps the first driving day scenic instead of exhausting.
  • Two Skye nights provide one full island day and room to change plans around visibility and wind.
  • An Inverness finish makes Loch Ness or Culloden optional without forcing a long southbound departure drive.

Day by day

The complete 7 days itinerary

1

Day 1 · Edinburgh

Arrive in Edinburgh and walk the Old Town

Take the tram, bus, or a fixed transfer into Edinburgh and check in for two nights. Walk a manageable section of the Royal Mile, explore a few closes, and finish around Grassmarket. Keep the castle for a reserved morning.

  1. Edinburgh airport
  2. Hotel check-in
  3. Royal Mile
  4. Grassmarket

Good to know: Do not collect the rental car yet. Central parking adds cost and stress without improving the Edinburgh days.

2

Day 2 · Edinburgh

Edinburgh Castle, the museum, and a city view

Book Edinburgh Castle early, then walk downhill through the Old Town. Use the National Museum of Scotland as a weatherproof afternoon anchor and climb Calton Hill only if visibility is worthwhile.

  1. Edinburgh Castle
  2. Old Town
  3. National Museum of Scotland
  4. Calton Hill

Good to know: Festival periods change crowd levels and lodging prices dramatically. Confirm city events before committing to dates.

3

Day 3 · Glencoe

Drive from Edinburgh to Glencoe

Collect the car after breakfast, stop at Stirling Castle, and continue west through the Highlands. Use only signed Glencoe lay-bys and choose one short walk based on rain, wind, and daylight. Stay in Glencoe or Ballachulish.

  1. Rental-car pickup
  2. Stirling Castle
  3. Glencoe viewpoints
  4. Glencoe village

Good to know: Schedule less than the map appears to allow. Scenic stops, narrow roads, and poor visibility can easily add hours.

4

Day 4 · Isle of Skye

Glenfinnan and the road to Skye

Drive north for the Glenfinnan viewpoint, then continue toward Eilean Donan and cross the Skye Bridge. Keep the castle interior optional so you reach Portree or a central-island base before dinner.

  1. Glenfinnan
  2. Eilean Donan Castle
  3. Skye Bridge
  4. Portree check-in

Good to know: Do not build the day around seeing a particular train at Glenfinnan. Timetables change, and the landscape is the reliable reason to stop.

5

Day 5 · Isle of Skye

Northern Skye with a weather-first plan

Start early at the Old Man of Storr, then choose Kilt Rock and one Quiraing viewpoint or walk. Return to Portree without attempting the entire island loop. If visibility is poor, use lower coastal stops and move the hike.

  1. Old Man of Storr
  2. Kilt Rock
  3. Quiraing
  4. Portree

Good to know: Passing places are not parking spaces. Let faster local traffic pass and never block a single-track road for a photograph.

6

Day 6 · Inverness

Skye to Inverness via Loch Ness

Leave Skye after breakfast, pause at Eilean Donan only if it was skipped, and continue along the lochs. Reserve Urquhart Castle or choose a simple Loch Ness viewpoint, then finish with a river walk in Inverness.

  1. Skye departure
  2. Loch Ness
  3. Urquhart Castle
  4. Inverness

Good to know: Check live Traffic Scotland conditions before leaving. One closure or convoy can change the best route.

7

Day 7 · Departure day

Culloden or a quiet Inverness morning

Visit Culloden only when the flight schedule leaves enough time for the interpretation center and battlefield. Otherwise, walk the River Ness, refuel the car, and return it at Inverness Airport without rushing.

  1. Optional Culloden
  2. River Ness
  3. Rental return
  4. Inverness Airport

Good to know: For an Edinburgh round-trip, add a night and return through the Cairngorms instead of attaching a four-hour drive to departure day.

Before you go

Make the plan dependable

Rent the smallest practical car

A compact automatic is easier on single-track roads and in village parking. Reserve early if automatic transmission is required, and understand the tire, wheel, and roadside coverage.

Check roads every driving morning

Traffic Scotland reports live incidents and planned works. Weather and maintenance can affect the A82, A87, and A9, so keep the next stop flexible until departure.

Give Skye two nights minimum

One night produces two transfer days and little usable island time. Two nights allow one full day and make it possible to swap a walk when visibility is poor.

Treat outdoor stops as conditional

Wind, rain, saturated ground, and low cloud can make a famous hike a poor choice. Keep lower viewpoints, museums, and cafés saved as real alternatives.

Make it yours

Useful variations

Without a rental car

Keep Edinburgh and Inverness, then use a small-group Highlands and Skye tour. Public transport reaches major towns but does not reproduce this exact viewpoint-heavy route efficiently.

For an Edinburgh return

Add an eighth night in Pitlochry or the Cairngorms between Inverness and Edinburgh. Do not compress the return into the flight day.

For more hiking

Add a third Skye night. Use it for the Fairy Pools, a longer Quiraing route, or a weather replacement—not for extending the daily driving radius.

FAQ

Common planning questions

Is seven days enough for Edinburgh and the Highlands?

Yes for Edinburgh, Glencoe, Skye, and Inverness when you arrive in Edinburgh and depart from Inverness. A round trip to Edinburgh is better with at least one additional night.

Do I need a car for this Scotland itinerary?

For this exact route, yes. A guided tour is the best car-free substitute. Edinburgh itself does not need a car, so collect it only when leaving the city.

Is driving on the Isle of Skye difficult?

It requires patience. Many roads are narrow or single-track, weather changes quickly, and popular parking fills early. Understand passing places, allow local traffic through, and avoid driving after a long flight.

Where should I stay on Skye?

Portree is practical for food and the northern loop, while a central location near Broadford can simplify arrival and departure. Availability and parking matter more than a perfect postcard address.
