Quick answer

The best route for 9 days · 8 nights

Spend three nights in Seoul, two in Gyeongju, and three in Busan. Take the KTX from Seoul to Gyeongju and continue by rail to Busan. This creates two full days in the capital, one complete Silla heritage day, and two distinct Busan days without a domestic flight or rental car.

Nine days can show three very different sides of South Korea: the scale and palaces of Seoul, Gyeongju’s walkable Silla-era landscape, and Busan’s dense neighborhoods and coast. The route moves south in one direction and ends at a second international airport.

The itinerary uses public transport throughout. High-speed stations, historic centers, and airports are not always in the same district, so every transfer day includes the actual local connection rather than treating the KTX ride as the whole journey.

Why this route works

  • Three Seoul nights leave two full days after the long-haul arrival.
  • Two Gyeongju nights separate Bulguksa from the central heritage walking day.
  • Three Busan nights support an east-coast day and a separate southwest-and-market day.
  • The open-jaw Seoul-to-Busan direction avoids returning north solely for a flight.

Day by day

The complete 9 days itinerary

1

Day 1 · Seoul

AREX into Seoul and an easy stream walk

Take the official airport railroad to Seoul Station, continue to a three-night base near a useful subway line, and walk a short part of Cheonggyecheon only if energy allows.

  1. Incheon Airport
  2. AREX
  3. Seoul Station
  4. Cheonggyecheon

Good to know: The express and all-stop airport trains have different tickets and stopping patterns. Follow the option you actually purchased.

2

Day 2 · Seoul

Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon, and Insadong

Start at Gyeongbokgung near opening, walk through Bukchon respectfully, and continue to Insadong. Finish at Gwangjang Market by subway rather than crossing the city several more times.

  1. Gyeongbokgung Palace
  2. Bukchon Hanok Village
  3. Insadong
  4. Gwangjang Market

Good to know: Confirm the palace closure day and observe the posted visiting hours in residential Bukchon lanes.

3

Day 3 · Seoul

Markets, Korean art, and the Han River

Browse Namdaemun in the morning, choose a Namsan viewpoint if visibility is good, then use the National Museum of Korea as the afternoon anchor. Finish at the Han River only when weather and energy cooperate.

  1. Namdaemun Market
  2. Namsan
  3. National Museum of Korea
  4. Banpo Hangang Park
4

Day 4 · Gyeongju

KTX to Gyeongju and Bulguksa

Depart from Seoul Station, take the reserved KTX to Gyeongju Station, and continue by taxi or timed bus to Bulguksa. Check in for two nights near the central heritage district.

  1. Seoul Station
  2. KTX to Gyeongju
  3. Bulguksa Temple
  4. Gyeongju check-in

Good to know: Gyeongju’s high-speed station is outside the historic center. Save the onward bus or taxi leg instead of assuming you can walk.

5

Day 5 · Gyeongju

Walk through the Silla capital

Begin at Daereungwon, continue through the park to Cheomseongdae and Gyochon, and reach Woljeonggyo Bridge before the evening. Finish at Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond after checking hours.

  1. Daereungwon
  2. Cheomseongdae
  3. Gyochon
  4. Woljeonggyo
  5. Donggung & Wolji

Good to know: This day is intentionally compact and mostly walkable. Do not dilute it with a long regional transfer.

6

Day 6 · Busan

Rail to Busan and central-market evening

Return to Gyeongju Station, take the train to Busan, and check in for three nights near a subway interchange. Use Jagalchi and BIFF Square as the flexible arrival outing.

  1. Gyeongju Station
  2. Train to Busan
  3. Jagalchi Market
  4. Busan check-in
7

Day 7 · Busan

Temples and beaches along east Busan

Leave early for Haedong Yonggungsa, return toward Haeundae, and continue to Cheongsapo only if the coastal connection fits. End at Gwangalli for the bridge view.

  1. Haedong Yonggungsa
  2. Haeundae Beach
  3. Cheongsapo
  4. Gwangalli Beach

Good to know: Busan is geographically large. Follow this east-to-west sequence instead of bouncing between the two coasts.

8

Day 8 · Busan

Gamcheon, Songdo, and Nampo-dong

Visit Gamcheon early, continue to Songdo, and finish back around Nampo-dong and BIFF Square. Keep the colorful village visit respectful of residents and signed no-entry areas.

  1. Gamcheon Culture Village
  2. Songdo Bay
  3. BIFF Square
  4. Nampo-dong
9

Day 9 · Departure day

Depart from Gimhae Airport

Use the subway and light rail or an official taxi to Gimhae International Airport. Preserve extra time for the transfer and any separate international connection.

  1. Busan checkout
  2. Airport transfer
  3. Gimhae International Airport

Before you go

Make the plan dependable

Reserve the correct stations

Seoul Station, Gyeongju Station, Busan Station, and Bujeon are distinct. Book the exact rail legs in the template and retain the local transfer on both ends.

Use a transit card for city movement

A reloadable transit card simplifies most subway and bus rides, but keep a payment backup and check current airport and intercity rules separately.

Check palace and museum closure days

Assign calendar dates only after confirming official weekly closures. Reorder the two Seoul days rather than losing a headline site.

Plan for stairs and hills

Palaces, Gamcheon, Haedong Yonggungsa, and coastal viewpoints involve substantial walking and elevation. Comfortable shoes matter more than adding one more stop.

Make it yours

Useful variations

For more Seoul

Drop one Busan night and add Suwon or another Seoul neighborhood day, keeping the Gyeongju stop intact.

For Jeonju

Add two nights between Seoul and Gyeongju. Do not force Jeonju into a rail transfer day with luggage.

For a round-trip Seoul flight

Take a late-day KTX from Busan to Seoul and add a final airport-area night rather than risking a same-ticket assumption across separate bookings.

FAQ

Common planning questions

Is nine days enough for Seoul, Gyeongju, and Busan?

Yes. Eight nights provide two full Seoul days, one full Gyeongju day, and two full Busan days, plus useful arrival and transfer edges.

Do I need a rental car in South Korea?

No. KTX, subway, buses, and occasional taxis cover this route. A car adds parking and navigation work without improving the three city bases.

Should I visit Gyeongju as a Busan day trip?

An overnight is better. It allows an evening around Woljeonggyo and Donggung/Wolji, separates Bulguksa from the central heritage zone, and avoids a rushed return train.

Can I add Jeju Island?

Add at least three nights and a flight. Replacing Gyeongju or compressing Busan to one night changes the character of this rail-first route.
