Quick answer

The best route for 10 days · 9 nights

Spend three nights each in Istanbul, Göreme, and Selçuk. Fly from Istanbul to Kayseri or Nevşehir, then travel to İzmir after Cappadocia using the best same-day air connection available for your dates. Finish near Ephesus and depart through İzmir rather than backtracking to Istanbul.

Türkiye’s three best-known first-trip regions are far apart, so the itinerary treats domestic flights and airport transfers as real travel days. Istanbul receives two full days, Cappadocia gets two full days plus multiple weather windows, and Ephesus is visited from a calm three-night Selçuk base.

A balloon flight is never guaranteed. Wind and visibility decisions are safety-critical, so the schedule makes it optional and keeps the valleys, open-air museum, and underground city valuable without it.

Why this route works

  • Three Istanbul nights separate the historic peninsula from the Bosphorus and newer districts.
  • Three Cappadocia nights create more than one possible balloon morning and two complete ground days.
  • Selçuk is a practical base for an early Ephesus entry without commuting from central İzmir.
  • An open-jaw arrival and departure reduces backtracking across a very large country.

Day by day

The complete 10 days itinerary

1

Day 1 · Istanbul

Arrive in Istanbul and stay close to the hotel

Transfer from the airport, check in for three nights, and take a short neighborhood walk. Use the Bosphorus or Sultanahmet skyline for orientation without a timed entry.

  1. Istanbul airport
  2. Hotel transfer
  3. Neighborhood walk
  4. Early dinner

Good to know: The city’s airports are far from many central districts. Treat the transfer as part of the arrival day, not an incidental taxi ride.

2

Day 2 · Istanbul

Focus on the historic peninsula

Start early around Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, then reserve Topkapı Palace or the Basilica Cistern as the main ticketed interior. Keep prayer times and current entry rules in view.

  1. Sultanahmet Square
  2. Hagia Sophia area
  3. Blue Mosque
  4. Topkapı Palace or Basilica Cistern

Good to know: Religious access rules and visitor queues change. Dress respectfully and confirm current entry arrangements immediately before the visit.

3

Day 3 · Istanbul

Cross the Bosphorus by public ferry

Walk the Galata and Karaköy area, then use a public ferry to Kadıköy. The crossing is both transport and the day’s best skyline experience; finish with an unhurried market and food walk.

  1. Galata and Karaköy
  2. Bosphorus ferry
  3. Kadıköy market
  4. Asian-side dinner

Good to know: Use the live ferry timetable. A public route is more flexible than building the day around a long sightseeing cruise.

4

Day 4 · Göreme

Fly to Cappadocia and settle in

Fly to Kayseri or Nevşehir, take a prearranged shuttle to Göreme, and check in for three nights. Walk to a nearby sunset viewpoint only if the transfer arrives comfortably early.

  1. Istanbul airport transfer
  2. Domestic flight
  3. Cappadocia airport shuttle
  4. Göreme check-in

Good to know: Match the shuttle to the actual airport code. Kayseri and Nevşehir are different airports with different transfer times.

5

Day 5 · Göreme

Explore Göreme and one nearby valley

If a balloon flight operates, use the early slot; otherwise start later. Visit the Göreme Open Air Museum, then choose one signed valley walk that fits heat, trail conditions, and daylight.

  1. Optional balloon flight
  2. Göreme Open Air Museum
  3. One valley walk
  4. Göreme evening

Good to know: Do not stack a full-day tour after a pre-dawn balloon start. Fatigue and summer heat make that combination less enjoyable than it sounds.

6

Day 6 · Göreme

Use a guided loop for the wider region

Join a small-group or private loop for an underground city and one wider valley or village. This is the day for places that are awkward to connect independently by public transit.

  1. Underground city
  2. Scenic valley viewpoint
  3. Village lunch
  4. Göreme return

Good to know: Tour labels are inconsistent. Compare the actual stops, group size, walking, and shopping time—not just a color-coded name.

7

Day 7 · Selçuk

Travel from Cappadocia to Selçuk

Take the airport shuttle and the best practical flight toward İzmir, using a connection when no suitable nonstop operates. Continue by rail or road to Selçuk and check in for three nights.

  1. Cappadocia airport transfer
  2. Flight to İzmir
  3. İzmir–Selçuk transfer
  4. Selçuk check-in

Good to know: Schedules vary by season. Protect the entire day and do not buy an Ephesus ticket for the afternoon.

8

Day 8 · Selçuk

Enter Ephesus early

Reach Ephesus near opening, walk the archaeological site in the cooler part of the day, and add the Terrace Houses only if the extra stairs fit. Return to Selçuk for the museum or a slow evening.

  1. Ephesus entrance
  2. Library of Celsus
  3. Terrace Houses optional
  4. Ephesus Museum in Selçuk

Good to know: The site is exposed and large. Carry water and sun protection, and confirm which gate best suits your transport and walking direction.

9

Day 9 · Selçuk

Keep the final full day local and flexible

Visit St John’s Basilica and the remains of the Temple of Artemis, then choose Şirince or a relaxed İzmir excursion. The day remains light after two long travel-and-archaeology days.

  1. St John’s Basilica
  2. Temple of Artemis
  3. Şirince or İzmir
  4. Selçuk evening

Good to know: Choose Şirince for a short village outing or İzmir for a larger city; doing both turns the day into transport.

10

Day 10 · Selçuk

Depart through İzmir

Travel to İzmir Airport with a generous buffer and continue home or elsewhere in Türkiye. Use the rail connection when its timetable matches the flight.

  1. Selçuk check-out
  2. Airport rail or transfer
  3. İzmir Airport

Good to know: For an early flight, sleep near the airport the night before rather than relying on the first morning connection.

Before you go

Make the plan dependable

Book the long chain in order

Fix international flights, domestic flights, Cappadocia airport shuttles, and the Ephesus day before adding smaller tours. One schedule change can affect several links.

Keep the balloon optional

Reserve with a reputable operator and clear cancellation terms, but make the ground itinerary satisfying on its own. Weather cancellations are normal safety decisions.

Check official museum rules

Opening hours, restoration access, and ticket products can change at Ephesus and Istanbul sites. Use the official museums portal close to travel.

Make it yours

Useful variations

If you have seven days

Choose Istanbul plus Cappadocia, or Istanbul plus Ephesus. Three distant regions need more than a week.

If you have twelve days

Add one Istanbul night and two nights at Pamukkale between Selçuk and the onward route, rather than inserting another single-night base.

FAQ

Common planning questions

Which airport should I use for Cappadocia?

Compare both Kayseri and Nevşehir for schedule, fare, and the matching hotel shuttle. The closer airport is not always the best overall connection.

Is a Cappadocia balloon flight guaranteed?

No. Flights can be canceled for wind or visibility. Three nights improve the chance of another morning, but the itinerary should work even if none operate.

Should I stay in İzmir or Selçuk for Ephesus?

Selçuk is more convenient for an early site visit and a slower pace. İzmir is better if city life and a very early airport departure matter more.
