Quick answer

The best route for 8 days · 7 nights

Spend three nights in Vienna, two in Salzburg, and two in Innsbruck. The westbound rail line makes both transfers simple, while an Innsbruck departure—or onward train to Munich or Zürich—avoids backtracking to Vienna.

Austria’s western rail corridor makes a clean first trip possible without a car. The route begins with Vienna’s larger museum and palace days, narrows to Salzburg’s compact old town, and ends where Innsbruck’s city center meets the mountains.

The final Alpine day stays conditional. Mountain lifts are worth using only when weather and operations cooperate, so the plan includes a low-elevation city alternative rather than treating a summit view as guaranteed.

Why this route works

  • Three Vienna nights support one palace day and one central-city day without stacking major interiors.
  • Salzburg’s old town and fortress fit around a two-night stay without a rushed lake-district day trip.
  • Innsbruck adds a genuinely different Alpine setting while remaining on frequent intercity rail.
  • Every hotel base can be chosen near transit, keeping luggage moves short and the route car-free.

Day by day

The complete 8 days itinerary

1

Day 1 · Vienna

Arrive in Vienna and follow the Ring

Check in for three nights and use the Ringstrasse tram or a short central walk for orientation. Keep St Stephen’s Cathedral and the surrounding lanes as flexible arrival stops.

  1. Vienna arrival
  2. Hotel check-in
  3. St Stephen’s Cathedral
  4. Innere Stadt walk

Good to know: Do not attach a palace ticket to the arrival day. Airport and international rail delays can consume the useful afternoon.

2

Day 2 · Vienna

Give Schönbrunn the morning

Travel to Schönbrunn for a reserved palace entry and garden time, then return toward the Naschmarkt and Secession. This keeps the day’s long interior separate from Vienna’s other major collections.

  1. Schönbrunn Palace
  2. Schönbrunn gardens
  3. Naschmarkt
  4. Secession area

Good to know: Palace admission products differ. Reserve the exact interior route you want and allow more time than the printed tour duration.

3

Day 3 · Vienna

Choose one imperial and one art anchor

Start around the Hofburg, then choose the Belvedere or Kunsthistorisches Museum as the afternoon anchor. Finish with a neighborhood dinner rather than squeezing in a third collection.

  1. Hofburg area
  2. Burggarten
  3. One major art museum
  4. Vienna coffeehouse

Good to know: Vienna’s collections are dense. One palace interior and one art museum is already a full day.

4

Day 4 · Salzburg

Ride the western line to Salzburg

Take a morning train to Salzburg, check in for two nights, and cross the Mirabell Gardens toward the old town. Save the fortress interior for tomorrow so the arrival walk can absorb delays.

  1. Vienna Hauptbahnhof
  2. Salzburg Hauptbahnhof
  3. Mirabell Gardens
  4. Getreidegasse

Good to know: Direct services run frequently, but discounted tickets can be train-specific. Check the conditions before choosing the cheapest fare.

5

Day 5 · Salzburg

Explore Salzburg above and below

Visit Salzburg Cathedral and the Residenzplatz area before climbing or taking the funicular to Hohensalzburg Fortress. Use the Mönchsberg paths for views if the weather is clear.

  1. Salzburg Cathedral
  2. Residenzplatz
  3. Hohensalzburg Fortress
  4. Mönchsberg

Good to know: The fortress and ridge already make a substantial day. Keep a lake-district excursion for a longer itinerary.

6

Day 6 · Innsbruck

Continue by rail to Innsbruck

Travel west to Innsbruck, leave luggage at the two-night base, and walk from Maria-Theresien-Strasse to the Golden Roof. Finish beside the Inn with the mountains in view.

  1. Salzburg station
  2. Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof
  3. Golden Roof
  4. Inn riverfront

Good to know: Sit on either side of the train without chasing a “perfect” seat; mountain views shift throughout the journey.

7

Day 7 · Innsbruck

Use the clearest window for Nordkette

If webcams and operations look good, take the city funicular and cableways toward Nordkette, choosing a level that fits the conditions. If cloud closes in, use the Imperial Palace, Tyrolean Folk Art Museum, and old town instead.

  1. Nordkette station
  2. Hungerburg
  3. Mountain viewpoint or city museums
  4. Old town

Good to know: Buy the mountain ticket after checking visibility and wind. Higher is not automatically better on a cloudy day.

8

Day 8 · Innsbruck

Depart Innsbruck or continue west

Use the short airport connection or continue by rail toward Munich, Zürich, or another Alpine destination. Keep the morning free unless departure is late.

  1. Innsbruck check-out
  2. Airport bus or onward rail
  3. Next destination

Good to know: If the international flight departs Vienna, add a Vienna airport night instead of crossing the country on the same day.

Before you go

Make the plan dependable

Compare point-to-point tickets and passes

This route has only two major intercity legs. Price the exact dates before assuming a rail pass is cheaper, and read the restrictions on advance fares.

Hold mountain plans loosely

Cableway maintenance, wind, and low cloud can change the Innsbruck day. Keep city museums as a real alternative, not a consolation prize.

Choose station-friendly bases

A short tram or walk from each Hauptbahnhof makes the two hotel changes much easier without sacrificing access to the historic centers.

Make it yours

Useful variations

If you have six days

Use Vienna and Salzburg only. Dropping Innsbruck preserves full days in both cities and an easy Vienna return.

If you have ten days

Add one Vienna day and one flexible Salzburg or Innsbruck day. Use that margin for the Wachau, Salzkammergut, or a second mountain-weather window.

FAQ

Common planning questions

Do I need a car for Vienna, Salzburg, and Innsbruck?

No. Intercity rail connects all three centers, and local transit covers the main sights. A car is useful only for a separate rural extension.

Should I add Hallstatt to this route?

Only if it is a priority and you can add time. A long day trip would compete with Salzburg’s only full day; an extra night in the lake district creates a better visit.

Can I fly home from Innsbruck?

Sometimes, depending on season and connections. Otherwise continue by rail to a larger gateway and sleep there before a long-haul departure.
