Quick answer
The best route for 9 days · 8 nights
Give Hanoi three nights, Ninh Binh two, and Hoi An three. Return from Ninh Binh to Hanoi’s airport for a flight to Da Nang, then continue by road to Hoi An. Protect that entire transfer day. This trip intentionally leaves out Ha Long Bay and southern Vietnam.
Hanoi, Ninh Binh, and Hoi An make a satisfying trip when each gets enough time to feel different. The city days are neighborhood based, the countryside stay includes a slow boat outing, and the final base allows a quieter coast-and-old-town rhythm.
One domestic flight connects the two regions. Booking it around a generous ground transfer matters more than squeezing an attraction into the morning. Plan an arrival into Hanoi and a departure from Da Nang when the available flights work.
Why this route works
- Two Ninh Binh nights avoid compressing boat time and countryside into a day trip.
- Hanoi comes before the countryside so the first days need little long-distance travel.
- Three Hoi An nights allow old-town time and a weather-flexible outing.
Day by day
The complete 9 days itinerary
Day 1 · Hanoi
Arrive in Hanoi
Check in and make a gentle loop around Hoan Kiem Lake. Keep the first evening to dinner and a short look at the Old Quarter, leaving museum visits and longer walks until after rest.
- Hotel check-in
- Hoan Kiem Lake
- Old Quarter dinner
Day 2 · Hanoi
Explore Hanoi in two clusters
Visit the Temple of Literature in the morning, then pause for lunch before returning to the Old Quarter. Choose a guided food walk or a self-paced evening rather than rushing between distant landmarks.
- Temple of Literature
- Lunch break
- Old Quarter walk
Day 3 · Hanoi
A museum and a slower neighborhood
Choose one museum that interests you and check its opening day before setting out. Follow it with a café and a neighborhood walk. Leave time to confirm tomorrow’s station or pickup and the exact location of your countryside stay.
- One Hanoi museum
- Neighborhood cafés
- Transfer preparation
Day 4 · Ninh Binh
Travel to the Ninh Binh countryside
Take a booked train or road transfer and continue locally to your accommodation near Tam Coc or Trang An. The station and countryside hotels are not interchangeable destinations. Use the afternoon for a short walk rather than a tightly timed boat departure.
- Hanoi departure
- Ninh Binh transfer
- Countryside check-in
Day 5 · Ninh Binh
Trang An and an unhurried afternoon
Make a Trang An boat outing the main activity, allowing for queues, sun, and the full circuit. Spend the afternoon at Hoa Lu or near your accommodation. Choose one additional stop rather than adding every viewpoint.
- Trang An boat outing
- Lunch break
- Hoa Lu
Good to know: Carry sun and rain protection and follow the boat operator’s instructions.
Day 6 · Hoi An
Transfer through Hanoi to Da Nang
Return by road to Hanoi’s airport with a generous margin, fly to Da Nang, and continue to Hoi An. Treat the whole day as travel. Book dinner only after arrival rather than attaching a timed old-town tour.
- Hanoi airport
- Da Nang flight
- Hoi An transfer
Good to know: If the flight timing is awkward, add a Hanoi airport night instead of relying on a tight connection.
Day 7 · Hoi An
Walk Hoi An’s old town
Start early for the historic streets, selecting a few ticketed heritage interiors that are open. Rest during the hottest part of the day and return toward evening for dinner near the river.
- Old town
- Heritage interiors
- Riverside dinner
Day 8 · Hoi An
Choose countryside or coast
Choose a guided countryside outing, cooking class, or a relaxed beach visit according to weather and interests. Avoid combining all three. Keep the late afternoon available for another old-town walk or shopping.
- Chosen local outing
- Lunch
- Free afternoon
Day 9 · Da Nang
Depart through Da Nang
Arrange the road transfer for your actual flight time and allow for traffic and check-in. If connecting onwards on a separate ticket, build in substantially more time or an overnight.
- Hoi An checkout
- Da Nang airport
Before you go
Make the plan dependable
Match the season to both regions
Northern and central Vietnam do not share one weather pattern. Check conditions in both Hanoi and Hoi An for your dates, and leave the coast day flexible when rain or storms are forecast.
Book the transfer, not just the flight
Confirm door-to-door arrangements from the Ninh Binh countryside to Hanoi airport and from Da Nang to Hoi An. A cheap airfare can be poor value if it forces an uncomfortable departure or an extra unplanned hotel.
Choose where you sleep
A countryside stay near Trang An or Tam Coc gives a different experience from a Ninh Binh city hotel. In Hoi An, decide between walkable old-town access and the beach; allow local transfer costs accordingly.
Make it yours
Useful variations
Seven days
Choose Hanoi and Ninh Binh only, or Hanoi and Hoi An with a flight. Remove a base rather than trimming every stop to one night.
Add a bay cruise
Add at least two days and return to Hanoi before the flight south. Confirm the cruise’s actual departure port and transfers instead of treating it as a nearby city attraction.
FAQ
Common planning questions
Is this a north-to-south Vietnam itinerary?
No. It covers Hanoi and Ninh Binh in the north and Hoi An in central Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta need another part of the trip.
Can I fly directly from Ninh Binh to Hoi An?
This route uses Hanoi’s airport and Da Nang’s airport, with ground transfers at both ends. Budget a full travel day.
Should I add Ha Long Bay?
Only with more time or by replacing Ninh Binh. Keeping both in nine days would remove the slower days that make this plan practical.
