Quick answer

The best route for 8 days · 7 nights

Spend two nights in Lucerne, three in Interlaken, and two in Zermatt. Travel from Zürich Airport directly to Lucerne, use Interlaken for separate Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald days, then finish in car-free Zermatt. This keeps every long move on rail and gives both mountain regions a weather alternative.

Eight days is enough for a first Swiss rail journey when the trip holds at three bases. Lucerne supplies the lake-and-city opening, Interlaken gives practical access to two different Bernese Oberland valleys, and Zermatt provides a distinct high-alpine finish.

Mountain views are never guaranteed. This itinerary separates the most weather-dependent excursions, keeps a lower-elevation alternative in every base, and records trains, boats, cog railways, and lifts as their real modes instead of pretending the route is drivable.

Why this route works

  • The airport-to-Lucerne rail start avoids spending a short trip on a separate Zürich hotel stay.
  • Three Interlaken nights support one Lauterbrunnen day and one Grindelwald day without moving luggage.
  • Zermatt receives two nights so Gornergrat has a second visibility window.
  • The route remains car-free, including Wengen and Zermatt, where a road-first plan would be misleading.

Day by day

The complete 8 days itinerary

1

Day 1 · Lucerne

Train from Zürich Airport to Lucerne

Follow the airport rail signs, travel to Lucerne, and check in for two nights. Walk the Chapel Bridge and Reuss riverfront only after dropping luggage. Keep every arrival-day stop untimed.

  1. Zürich Airport
  2. Lucerne railway station
  3. Chapel Bridge
  4. Lucerne check-in

Good to know: Some journeys are direct and others change at Zürich Hauptbahnhof. Use the exact connection shown for your date.

2

Day 2 · Lucerne

Cross Lake Lucerne and climb Mount Rigi

Take the lake boat to Vitznau, connect to the cogwheel railway, and choose a short Rigi Kulm walk. Return by the confirmed mountain-and-lake timetable, then use Lucerne’s old town for the evening.

  1. Lucerne Bahnhofquai
  2. Boat to Vitznau
  3. Rigi Kulm
  4. Lucerne old town

Good to know: Do not assume the last lake connection runs late. Build the day around the return timetable, not sunset.

3

Day 3 · Interlaken

Ride the scenic line to Interlaken

Take the Lucerne–Interlaken rail corridor, leave luggage at the three-night base, and use Harder Kulm only if the visibility justifies the fare. Otherwise walk the Aare and explore the town.

  1. Lucerne station
  2. Luzern–Interlaken train
  3. Interlaken Ost
  4. Optional Harder Kulm
4

Day 4 · Interlaken

Lauterbrunnen valley and car-free Wengen

Take the regional train to Lauterbrunnen, walk toward Staubbach Falls, then ride the mountain railway to Wengen. Return through Lauterbrunnen before the evening timetable thins.

  1. Interlaken Ost
  2. Lauterbrunnen
  3. Staubbach Falls
  4. Wengen

Good to know: Wengen is reached by rail, not by a driving route. Keep the connection in the shared itinerary so every traveler sees the right mode.

5

Day 5 · Interlaken

Grindelwald First or a low-weather village day

Travel to Grindelwald, continue by gondola to First when operations and visibility are good, and walk to Bachalpsee only on open paths. In poor weather, keep the day around Grindelwald village and Interlaken.

  1. Grindelwald Terminal
  2. Grindelwald First
  3. Optional Bachalpsee
  4. Interlaken return

Good to know: Check lift status, trail conditions, and webcams on the morning rather than treating a saved plan as proof of access.

6

Day 6 · Zermatt

Rail through Spiez and Visp to Zermatt

Leave Interlaken with enough time for the rail changes, continue through Visp, and arrive at car-free Zermatt for two nights. Use the village walk as the only arrival plan.

  1. Interlaken Ost
  2. Spiez or Visp connection
  3. Zermatt station
  4. Zermatt village

Good to know: Choose luggage you can move through platform changes and onto a narrow-gauge mountain train.

7

Day 7 · Zermatt

Gornergrat when the Matterhorn is visible

Check webcams and service status before buying the Gornergrat ticket. Ride the cog railway, take a short altitude-appropriate walk, then return for the Matterhorn Museum or an open village afternoon.

  1. Gornergrat Bahn
  2. Gornergrat
  3. Zermatt village
  4. Matterhorn Museum

Good to know: High elevation changes weather and effort. Carry layers and keep the lower-village plan genuinely acceptable.

8

Day 8 · Departure day

Return by train to Zürich Airport

Walk to Zermatt station and take a through itinerary via Visp toward Zürich Airport. Preserve a generous connection buffer and avoid adding a mountain excursion before a flight.

  1. Zermatt station
  2. Visp connection
  3. Zürich Airport

Before you go

Make the plan dependable

Price passes against the actual route

Compare point-to-point fares, saver products, and the relevant Swiss Travel Pass or Half Fare options. Mountain transport coverage and reservation rules differ from ordinary trains.

Save every transfer as its real mode

Wengen, Zermatt, Rigi, First, and Gornergrat involve railways, boats, or lifts. Do not replace them with driving directions because a road appears nearby on a general map.

Book beds before mountain tickets

Interlaken and Zermatt lodging can constrain the route. Most weather-sensitive mountain tickets should wait until the forecast is more useful unless a reservation is explicitly required.

Carry one lower-elevation plan

Lucerne museums, Interlaken lakeside towns, and Zermatt’s museum and village keep a cloudy day enjoyable without chasing a view that never clears.

Make it yours

Useful variations

For fewer bases

Drop Lucerne and travel from Zürich Airport directly to Interlaken, adding one night each to the Bernese Oberland and Zermatt.

For the GoldenPass route

Add two nights in Montreux between Interlaken and Zermatt. Do not squeeze the full scenic corridor into the existing transfer day.

For a Zürich city stay

Add a final Zürich night before the flight rather than shortening the two-night mountain bases.

FAQ

Common planning questions

Is eight days enough for Switzerland?

Yes for Lucerne, the Bernese Oberland, and Zermatt. It is not enough for this route plus Montreux, Ticino, St. Moritz, and the full Grand Train Tour.

Do I need a car for this Switzerland itinerary?

No. The complete route works by train, boat, mountain railway, local transit, and walking. A car would be unusable in Wengen and Zermatt and unnecessary in the other bases.

Should I stay in Interlaken or Lauterbrunnen?

Interlaken is the more flexible transport hub for separate Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald days. Lauterbrunnen is more atmospheric but makes some cross-valley plans longer.

Is Jungfraujoch included?

No. It is expensive, high, weather-sensitive, and not essential to this route. Add it to either Bernese Oberland day only after checking conditions, altitude considerations, and the official transport plan.
