Quick answer
The best route for 9 days · 8 nights
For a nine-day Tasmania road trip, spend three nights in Hobart, two near Freycinet at Coles Bay, two in Launceston, and a final night back in Hobart. This gives Freycinet a full day without a hotel move and protects the flight home from a long same-day drive. Use Wineglass Bay Lookout as the default walk only if its grade suits you; Cape Tourville is the shorter alternative.
Tasmania looks compact until you start adding everything you want to see. A coastal drive, a mountain walk, an art museum, and a historic site each deserve time beyond the line connecting them on the map. The best improvement you can make to a short road trip is often removing a region.
This route concentrates on Hobart, Freycinet, and Launceston. It leaves Cradle Mountain, the west coast, and a Port Arthur day for a longer trip. Two nights at Coles Bay make the park visit a day of its own, while the final Hobart night gives you breathing room before departure. The template uses a February example week; its dates are illustrative, and changing them means reviewing opening days, daylight, and conditions.
Why this route works
- Three first nights in Hobart leave room for the city and one substantial museum visit before the road trip starts.
- Two Coles Bay nights separate the Freycinet walk from the drive into the area.
- Two Launceston nights allow a gorge day without asking you to continue to Hobart afterward.
- A final Hobart night keeps the departure day focused on returning the car and catching the flight.
Day by day
The complete 9 days itinerary
Day 1 · Hobart
Arrive in Hobart
Reach your accommodation and take a short waterfront walk around Constitution Dock. Collect the car today only if it fits your arrival and parking arrangements; otherwise arrange pickup before leaving Hobart. Have dinner nearby and keep the first evening simple. The airport reference in the template is a starting point for your own booking, not a complete arrival schedule.
- Hobart Airport
- Constitution Dock
Good to know: Confirm accommodation parking, car collection hours, and any after-hours arrangements before arrival.
Day 2 · Hobart
Salamanca and Battery Point
Spend the morning around Salamanca Place, then continue into Battery Point at a comfortable pace. Have lunch and leave the afternoon for the waterfront, shops, or a rest. If a market is running on your dates, give it some of this time rather than treating it as an extra appointment. There is no long drive today.
- Salamanca Place
- Battery Point
- Hobart waterfront
Good to know: Check the current market calendar before expecting stalls; the streets and waterfront still make a useful city day without them.
Day 3 · Hobart
Make MONA the main event
Visit MONA with admission and transport arranged in advance. The template uses a road approach, while the ferry from Brooke Street Pier is an alternative that needs its own departure and return booking. Give the museum substantial time, then return to Hobart for dinner. Do not add a distant peninsula trip to the afternoon.
- MONA
- Return to Hobart waterfront
Good to know: MONA currently opens Thursday through Monday. The example dates put this on Sunday; swap Hobart days if your dates differ. Review the content and visit guidance for your group.
Day 4 · Coles Bay
Drive to Coles Bay
Leave Hobart after breakfast and use the east-coast drive as the main activity. Break around Swansea for food and a stretch, then continue to Coles Bay and check in. Pick up what you need for tomorrow and finish with a short local waterfront walk. Arriving before dark matters more than adding every roadside viewpoint.
- Hobart departure
- Swansea break
- Coles Bay waterfront
Good to know: Check road conditions, fuel, food options, and the forecast before leaving. Route estimates do not include breaks or slow sections.
Day 5 · Coles Bay
Freycinet with one realistic walk
Start with park information and current conditions, then go to the Wineglass Bay walking-track car park for the lookout walk if its grade suits everyone. The official lookout route is a steep 2.6-kilometer return walk, graded 3, with a published allowance of about 1–1.5 hours. Add your own breaks. Return to Coles Bay afterward; the beach descent is a different, longer outing.
- Freycinet visitor information
- Wineglass Bay walking-track car park
- Return to Coles Bay
Good to know: Cape Tourville is the shorter alternative in Ideas. Replace the lookout day’s walk with it; do not treat the two walks as compulsory.
Day 6 · Launceston
Drive to Launceston
Check out and drive toward Launceston with a planned food and rest stop on the chosen route. Keep the day for driving, check-in, and a short look at the city after arrival. The template marks the destination rather than adding detours that make the journey look deceptively busy. Save Cataract Gorge for the full day tomorrow.
- Coles Bay departure
- Launceston arrival
Good to know: Choose the actual road route after checking conditions. Leave enough daylight to reach your accommodation without hurrying.
Day 7 · Launceston
Cataract Gorge and a slow Launceston afternoon
Spend the morning around Cataract Gorge’s First Basin, choosing paths suited to your group and the conditions. Have lunch and keep the afternoon unhurried. If you want an indoor visit, the Queen Victoria Museum at Inveresk is saved in Ideas; it can replace part of the gorge time. The Art Gallery at Royal Park is a separate site, so check the address of the collection you want.
- Cataract Gorge — First Basin
- Launceston city afternoon
Good to know: The scheduled pin does not require a steep trail or chairlift. Check the local route information before extending the walk.
Day 8 · Hobart
Return to Hobart before the final night
Drive back to Hobart on the inland route, with a break around Ross if it fits the day’s conditions. Check in, sort bags, and confirm the car-return process for tomorrow. This evening is intentionally uncomplicated. You have already had the trip’s park and city days; there is no need to attach another full sightseeing loop to the return drive.
- Launceston departure
- Ross break
- Hobart final-night check-in
Good to know: Use a confirmed accommodation base with parking, or return the car today if that better fits the rental agreement and airport transfer.
Day 9 · Hobart
Return the car and depart
Allow time for fuel, the rental return, and the transfer from the return location to your terminal before the airline’s check-in deadline. If you returned the car yesterday, use the airport transfer you arranged. A spare morning is welcome, but keep it close to your accommodation and protect the departure buffer.

Before you go
Make the plan dependable
Book the scarce overnight base first
After checking flights and rental terms, compare accommodation around Coles Bay for the two Freycinet nights. Then fit Hobart and Launceston around it. Read parking and kitchen or meal arrangements rather than assuming every stay has the same facilities. The template uses approximate town pins, not campsites or reserved properties; replace each with the exact entrance you will use.
Separate the lookout from the beach
Tasmania Parks grades the Wineglass Bay Lookout walk 3 and describes a steep climb. Reaching the lookout is not the same as descending to the beach and returning. Cape Tourville is a different, shorter grade-1 circuit, listed as 600 meters and about 20 minutes. Choose according to the group and conditions. Even an easier grade does not remove the need to check current access and individual mobility needs.
Arrange the park pass and read alerts
Freycinet requires the appropriate park entry pass. Check the official pass guidance, alerts, fire restrictions, and walking conditions before your visit. Keep enough water, clothing, and food for the outing you choose. A booking or clear morning forecast is not a guarantee that a track will remain suitable throughout the day; change the plan when local guidance requires it.
Keep driving in daylight where practical
The park’s visitor guidance highlights wildlife risk when driving at night. Give the longer transfer days generous margins, stop for food and rest, and avoid planning a sunset walk that leaves a long unfamiliar drive afterward. Confirm rental conditions and road suitability. The map’s driving time is a starting estimate, not the total elapsed time of a travel day.
Align Hobart with MONA’s calendar
MONA currently lists Thursday–Monday opening. Check the calendar for your dates and arrange admission plus the transport you choose. If taking the ferry, use its actual pier and return sailing; it is not interchangeable with the template’s road approach. Review the museum’s visitor guidance and content before deciding whether it fits everyone in your party.
Know which Launceston visit you mean
Cataract Gorge offers different paths and facilities around First Basin; choose a route deliberately instead of assuming every walk has the same difficulty. QVMAG has a museum at Inveresk and an art gallery at Royal Park. If you use the museum alternative, navigate to Inveresk and confirm the current exhibits and hours before leaving.
Price the whole road trip
Include rental cover and conditions, parking, fuel, park access, accommodation, meals, and chosen admissions. Check whether a one-way rental fee changes the value of an alternative Launceston departure. This loop returns to Hobart, but a different flight plan can justify a different route. Leave space in the budget and calendar for weather changes rather than prepaying every spare hour.
Make it yours
Useful variations
Prefer easier walks
Replace Wineglass Bay Lookout with Cape Tourville after checking current access. Keep the rest of the day around Coles Bay and select suitable First Basin paths in Launceston. The trip still works without a major climb; you do not have to earn every landscape with a strenuous walk.
Have only seven days
Use three Hobart nights, two Coles Bay nights, and a final Hobart night, leaving Launceston for another visit. This preserves a full Freycinet day and the preflight buffer. Compressing all three bases into seven days creates more driving relative to time outside the car.
Want Cradle Mountain or Port Arthur too
Add nights and research a separate segment. Cradle Mountain needs its own accommodation, access, and weather plan. Port Arthur deserves a dedicated outing from the Hobart end. Neither should become an automatic detour on an already substantial transfer day.
FAQ
Common planning questions
Is nine days enough to drive around Tasmania?
Nine days is enough for this focused Hobart–Freycinet–Launceston loop, including a return to Hobart. It is not a complete circuit of Tasmania and does not include the west coast or Cradle Mountain.
Do I have to hike to Wineglass Bay beach?
No. The default outing is the lookout return walk, which is still a steep grade-3 route. The beach descent adds distance and effort. Cape Tourville is saved as a shorter alternative, subject to current conditions and your group’s needs.
Why stay in Hobart again before flying home?
The final night separates the longer return drive from car return and airport check-in. If you choose a different departure city, rebuild the rental and flight plan explicitly rather than assuming the loop still fits.
