Quick answer

The best route for 11 days · 10 nights

Spend three nights each in Sydney and Melbourne, then rent a car for three nights on the Great Ocean Road: Lorne, Apollo Bay, and Port Campbell. Return to Melbourne for a final night so a long coastal drive never connects directly to an international flight.

Australia’s scale punishes compressed itineraries. This eleven-day route chooses two major cities and one regional drive, using a domestic flight between Sydney and Melbourne and saving the rental car for the coast.

The Great Ocean Road receives three nights because the experience is the road, towns, forest, and changing weather—not simply a photograph at the Twelve Apostles. The final Melbourne night separates highway delays from the flight home.

Why this route works

  • Three Sydney nights provide two full days without turning the harbor and beaches into one cross-city sprint.
  • Three Melbourne nights support the central city and neighborhoods before the rental-car pickup.
  • Lorne, Apollo Bay, and Port Campbell keep daily driving modest and preserve stops along the coast and in the Otways.
  • The final Melbourne night creates a safety buffer and avoids an expensive one-way car itinerary.

Day by day

The complete 11 days itinerary

1

Day 1 · Sydney

Arrive in Sydney and see the harbor gently

Take the airport train or arranged transfer, check in for three nights, and walk around Circular Quay and the Rocks only as energy allows.

  1. Sydney Airport
  2. City transfer
  3. Circular Quay
  4. The Rocks

Good to know: The airport train adds a station access fee. Use the same contactless card for each adult and tap on and off correctly.

2

Day 2 · Sydney

Use ferries for the harbor day

Walk through the Royal Botanic Garden toward the Opera House, cross Circular Quay, then take a public ferry to Manly. The ferry supplies the skyline views without a separate harbor cruise.

  1. Royal Botanic Garden
  2. Sydney Opera House
  3. Circular Quay
  4. Manly ferry

Good to know: Check the return ferry timetable and water conditions, especially if staying for sunset.

3

Day 3 · Sydney

Walk from Bondi toward Coogee

Use transit to Bondi, walk as much of the coastal path toward Coogee as weather and fitness suit, then return by bus. Keep the evening close to the hotel.

  1. Bondi Beach
  2. Bondi–Coogee coastal walk
  3. One beach stop
  4. Bus return

Good to know: The route has stairs, exposure, and little shade. Shorten it in heat or rough weather rather than treating the full distance as mandatory.

4

Day 4 · Melbourne

Fly to Melbourne and walk the center

Fly to Melbourne, transfer into the city, and check in for three nights. Use the lanes, arcades, Federation Square, and Yarra riverfront as a flexible arrival loop.

  1. Sydney Airport
  2. Flight to Melbourne
  3. City transfer
  4. Lanes and arcades

Good to know: Melbourne has more than one commercial airport. Confirm the airport code before choosing the city transfer.

5

Day 5 · Melbourne

Pair Melbourne art with the river

Visit the National Gallery of Victoria or another major collection, walk the river and central lanes, then choose one neighborhood for dinner.

  1. Federation Square
  2. One major gallery
  3. Yarra riverfront
  4. Neighborhood dinner

Good to know: The free-tram zone is useful centrally but does not cover every neighborhood. Check the boundary before boarding.

6

Day 6 · Melbourne

See Melbourne beyond the central grid

Start at Queen Victoria Market when its current trading calendar allows, then take a tram to St Kilda or explore Fitzroy and Carlton. Keep the day urban and car-free.

  1. Queen Victoria Market
  2. Carlton or Fitzroy
  3. St Kilda optional
  4. Melbourne evening

Good to know: Market trading days vary. Swap days five and six rather than forcing a closed market into the schedule.

7

Day 7 · Lorne

Pick up the car and drive to Lorne

Collect the rental car after leaving the city, travel through Torquay, and follow the eastern Great Ocean Road to Lorne. Stop selectively at the coast and Memorial Arch.

  1. Rental-car pickup
  2. Torquay
  3. Memorial Arch
  4. Lorne check-in

Good to know: Drive on the left, confirm toll and insurance terms, and avoid collecting the car until the city stay is finished.

8

Day 8 · Apollo Bay

Follow the coast and forest to Apollo Bay

Drive the winding coast at a relaxed pace, choosing a beach, waterfall, or short forest walk before Apollo Bay. Keep daylight and road conditions ahead of the checklist.

  1. Lorne
  2. One waterfall or forest walk
  3. Coastal viewpoints
  4. Apollo Bay check-in

Good to know: Travel times on the Great Ocean Road are longer than distance suggests. Curves, stops, wildlife, and weather all slow the day.

9

Day 9 · Port Campbell

Cross the Otways to Port Campbell

Continue through Great Otway National Park, then reach the Twelve Apostles and nearby limestone coast when light and weather are favorable. Sleep in Port Campbell.

  1. Great Otway National Park
  2. Twelve Apostles
  3. Loch Ard Gorge
  4. Port Campbell

Good to know: Use marked lookouts and closures. Cliffs, waves, and wind can be hazardous beyond barriers.

10

Day 10 · Melbourne

Return inland to Melbourne

Use the faster inland route back to Melbourne, return the car, and sleep in the city or near the airport. Keep sightseeing optional after the drive.

  1. Port Campbell check-out
  2. Inland return drive
  3. Rental-car return
  4. Final Melbourne night

Good to know: Fuel the car before the final urban segment and allow extra time for return inspection and airport-hotel traffic.

11

Day 11 · Melbourne

Depart Melbourne with margin

Use the confirmed airport transfer and depart without a highway drive attached to the same day. Continue elsewhere in Australia only if the next region has enough time of its own.

  1. Melbourne check-out
  2. Airport transfer
  3. Melbourne Airport

Good to know: Domestic and international terminals may have different check-in needs. Confirm the airport and terminal before leaving the hotel.

Before you go

Make the plan dependable

Rent the car only for the coast

Sydney and Melbourne are easier by transit. Delaying pickup avoids city parking and gives the Great Ocean Road rental a simple round-trip shape.

Book small-town rooms early

Lorne, Apollo Bay, and Port Campbell have limited inventory during weekends and holidays. Fix those nights before choosing minor stops.

Never race the coastal road

Wind, rain, wildlife, construction, and viewpoints change drive times. Each overnight is intentionally close enough to arrive before dark.

Make it yours

Useful variations

If you have eight days

Choose Sydney and Melbourne with a guided Great Ocean Road day, or choose Melbourne plus the three-night drive. Do not compress the self-drive to one overnight.

If you have fourteen days

Add two Blue Mountains nights near Sydney and one more regional Victoria night, or continue west toward Adelaide with a separately researched route.

FAQ

Common planning questions

Can I see the Great Ocean Road as a day trip?

Yes on a guided highlights tour, but a self-drive is better over at least two and preferably three nights. A day return from Melbourne is long and leaves little time away from the vehicle.

Do I need a car in Sydney or Melbourne?

No. Both city sections work well by train, tram, bus, ferry, and walking. Pick up the car only when leaving Melbourne for the coast.

Should I fly or take the train from Sydney to Melbourne?

For an eleven-day trip, flying protects more useful time. Choose the train only when the overland journey itself is a priority and add time for it.
