Quick answer
The best route for 6 days · 5 nights
Spend three nights in Springdale for Zion, then one near Bryce Canyon before returning to Las Vegas. Use Zion’s shuttle system when operating and choose walks for your ability. This plan does not depend on securing an Angels Landing permit or on the Narrows being safe to enter.
Zion and Bryce reward different kinds of days: canyon-floor wandering in one, high-elevation rim views in the other. Concentrating on these two parks creates room for the weather and for rest between walks.
The arrival and departure are built around Las Vegas, but the park days are the point. Avoid attaching distant viewpoints simply because they appear nearby on a map; every additional stop competes with time outside the car.
Why this route works
- Two full Zion days allow one active day and one lighter alternative.
- An overnight near Bryce avoids making its rim viewpoints a rushed out-and-back.
- The final airport-city night protects the departure from road delays.
Day by day
The complete 6 days itinerary
Day 1 · Springdale
Arrive and drive to Springdale
Collect the car and drive to your Zion base with a meal break. Check in and learn where your accommodation sits relative to the park entrance and town shuttle. A short evening stroll is plenty after travel.
- Las Vegas airport
- Springdale
- Accommodation check-in
Good to know: Nevada and Utah clocks can differ. Check local times when planning arrival and tours.
Day 2 · Springdale
See Zion from the canyon floor
Start with the visitor center and use the park shuttle when it is running. Combine a few canyon stops with Riverside Walk if open. Enjoy the paved riverside setting without assuming you will continue into the river.
- Zion visitor center
- Canyon shuttle
- Riverside Walk
Good to know: A walk beside the river and a Narrows hike are different outings with different preparation.
Day 3 · Springdale
Choose one main Zion walk
Choose a currently open trail after checking conditions, heat, and your group’s ability. Leave the afternoon for rest or the Pa’rus Trail. Keep this day interchangeable with the previous one if the forecast changes.
- Selected Zion trail
- Springdale lunch
- Pa’rus Trail
Good to know: Permit-dependent or exposed hikes are optional substitutions, not required stops in this route.
Day 4 · Bryce Canyon City
Move to Bryce and explore the rim
Drive toward Bryce using a route suitable for your vehicle and current road conditions. After check-in, start with the visitor center and the main amphitheater viewpoints. Save a descent below the rim for tomorrow if energy and conditions allow.
- Bryce visitor center
- Sunset Point
- Sunrise Point
Day 5 · Las Vegas
Bryce morning, then Las Vegas
Choose a short rim walk or an open below-rim loop early, with enough time to climb back out. Begin the return drive before the day becomes rushed. Plan a meal stop and a simple evening in Las Vegas.
- Bryce rim walk
- Return drive
- Las Vegas hotel
Good to know: Bryce is high and can be cold or icy when Zion feels mild. Check conditions for the specific trail.
Day 6 · Las Vegas
Return the car and depart
Leave the final day free of park driving. Account for rental-car return and airport transfers, especially after a late arrival the previous evening.
- Hotel checkout
- Car return
- Las Vegas airport
Before you go
Make the plan dependable
Start with lodging and access
Reserve Springdale and Bryce-area lodging first. Then check official shuttle dates, current entrance requirements, trail closures, and any permit needed for an optional hike. Park access does not automatically grant access to every trail.
Fit the walking to the weather
Extreme heat, storms, snow, and ice can change a day’s plan. Use official park alerts and ranger guidance. Scenic stops and shorter walks are legitimate full days; this route does not require a strenuous hike.
Keep drives realistic
Download directions, check fuel, and allow time for food and road delays. Oversize vehicles need additional route planning, especially around Zion’s tunnel; verify current restrictions directly with the park.
Make it yours
Useful variations
Four days
Choose Zion only, staying in Springdale and retaining a final Las Vegas night. Cutting a park is more useful than turning every day into a transfer.
Eight days
Add a second Bryce night and another Zion night before considering a third park. The extra time can support a longer walk or a weather recovery day.
FAQ
Common planning questions
Does this trip cover the Grand Canyon?
No. This route is deliberately limited to Zion and Bryce Canyon. Add several days and redesign the return journey if the Grand Canyon is a priority.
Do I need an Angels Landing permit?
Not for the itinerary described here. If you choose that hike as a substitution, check its current permit system and conditions with Zion National Park.
Can I drive through Zion instead of using the shuttle?
Check current seasonal rules. When the canyon shuttle operates, ordinary private-car access to Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is restricted. The through-highway and canyon drive are different roads.
