Quick answer
The best route for 7 days · 6 nights
For seven days in Montréal and Québec City, spend three nights in each and take the train on day four. Use Montréal’s two full days for Old Montréal and Mount Royal with a neighborhood afternoon. In Québec City, split the upper and lower old town across two full days. Book your train to the station you actually want: Gare du Palais and Sainte-Foy require different onward plans.
These two cities fit neatly into a week if you resist the urge to add a car and several side trips. Montréal gives you a larger city’s neighborhoods, food stops, and park time. Québec City gives you compact historic streets, river views, and enough slopes to remind you that a short distance is not always a short walk.
The route uses three nights in each city and a dedicated transfer day. It is best suited to an arrival in Montréal and a departure from Québec City. If you need to fly home from Montréal, add the return journey explicitly, ideally with a final Montréal night. The template does not pretend that a departure from the second city is the same as a flight from the first.
Why this route works
- A train transfer connects the two bases without the parking arrangements of a city car trip.
- Old Montréal has its own day, so a basilica visit does not compete with the climb on Mount Royal.
- Québec City’s upper and lower neighborhoods are separated into manageable walking days.
- Three nights in each city leave four full sightseeing days, plus the intercity journey and travel at either end.
Day by day
The complete 7 days itinerary
Day 1 · Montréal
Arrive in Montréal
Reach your accommodation, unpack, and find dinner nearby. The template starts at Gare Centrale as a city-center reference, not as an instruction to take every airport transfer through the station. If you have energy, take a short walk near your hotel. Leave the old town’s major sights for tomorrow, when you can enjoy them without luggage or a flight delay in the background.
- Montréal arrival reference
- Neighborhood dinner
Good to know: Add the real arrival terminal and ground transfer after choosing accommodation.
Day 2 · Montréal
Old Montréal and the waterfront
Start around Place d’Armes and visit Notre-Dame Basilica with the correct admission product. Continue through the old streets toward Place Jacques-Cartier, then spend the afternoon around the Old Port. Have a proper lunch between the interior visit and the waterfront. This is a day for looking up at the buildings and stopping when something catches your eye.
- Place d’Armes
- Notre-Dame Basilica
- Place Jacques-Cartier
- Old Port
Good to know: Daytime sightseeing and AURA are separate experiences. Check which one your booking covers.
Day 3 · Montréal
Mount Royal and a neighborhood afternoon
Set aside the morning for Mount Royal and its Kondiaronk lookout, selecting an approach that suits your walking ability. Come down for a long lunch, then use transit to the Plateau around Avenue du Mont-Royal for cafés and neighborhood streets. You do not need to add a second major museum. In poor conditions, replace the hill walk with an indoor visit and keep the afternoon local.
- Mount Royal — Kondiaronk lookout
- Plateau — Avenue du Mont-Royal
Good to know: The lookout is an uphill outing. Check paths and footing, particularly outside the warmer months; the template is not a winter trail assessment.
Day 4 · Québec City
Travel to Québec City
Leave from Montréal Gare Centrale on the dated VIA Rail service you have booked. Confirm that your arrival is Gare du Palais, as used in the template, or replace the pin and hotel transfer if you chose Sainte-Foy. After arrival, check in and eat near your accommodation. Keep the afternoon free of prepaid attractions so the journey can take the time it needs.
- Montréal Gare Centrale
- Québec Gare du Palais
- Québec City check-in
Good to know: Use your ticket’s schedule, baggage rules, and station guidance. The template’s rail duration is an allowance, not a promised travel time.
Day 5 · Québec City
Upper Town and the river views
Begin on Dufferin Terrace beside the Château Frontenac exterior. Explore the upper old town at a comfortable pace, stopping for lunch before continuing toward the fortifications around Porte Saint-Louis. If you still want open space, finish at the near edge of the Plains of Abraham. Keep museum interiors for a deliberate swap rather than treating the entire neighborhood as a checklist.
- Dufferin Terrace
- Château Frontenac exterior
- Porte Saint-Louis
- Plains of Abraham edge
Good to know: The château stop is an exterior visit. A hotel tour or restaurant reservation is a separate choice.
Day 6 · Québec City
Lower Town, Petit-Champlain, and the Old Port
Choose a suitable descent to Place Royale and continue through Petit-Champlain. Give the shops and small streets time, then have lunch before walking toward the Old Port. This is your slower Québec City day and a useful weather buffer. If you want a museum, choose one and replace part of the walk rather than squeezing it into the last hour.
- Place Royale
- Petit-Champlain
- Québec Old Port
Good to know: Research the current funicular or another suitable access option if stairs and steep streets are a problem. Cobblestones can still make the lower town demanding.
Day 7 · Québec City
Depart from Québec City
Have breakfast and head to the airport or station on your booking. The template uses Gare du Palais as an onward reference and needs replacing if you fly. If your flight is from Montréal, this is a different travel plan: add the full intercity connection and a realistic airport buffer, or stay in Montréal the night before.

Before you go
Make the plan dependable
Make the train station part of the booking decision
VIA Rail serves different Québec-area arrival points. This route uses Gare du Palais for its connection with the old city. Read the station name before paying and confirm the onward journey to your hotel. Keep station arrival time, luggage handling, and the hotel transfer outside the train’s advertised running time. Do not book an important attraction immediately after arrival.
Choose comfortable bases for bags and hills
In Montréal, compare downtown or Old Montréal accommodation against transit and your intended evenings. In Québec City, an old-town address can be atmospheric but may involve steps, steep streets, or a difficult luggage approach. Ask about the actual entrance and elevator if either matters. The template’s stay pins indicate broad areas and should be replaced with the booked properties.
Buy the basilica experience you want
Notre-Dame sells daytime sightseeing and AURA experiences as distinct products, with combination options also advertised. Decide whether you want to explore the interior by day, attend the evening show, or both. Check the calendar and ticket conditions directly. Do not assume attendance at a service is a substitute for a sightseeing ticket.
Match the outdoor plan to the season
The route’s default rhythm favors comfortable walking conditions. Mount Royal and Québec City’s slopes need a different approach when snow, ice, heat, or heavy rain makes walking harder. Check current conditions and shorten the route before you leave the hotel. The illustrated autumn cover conveys the destinations; it does not predict foliage timing or conditions for your week.
Budget for a two-city stay, not just the train
Compare accommodation totals, the rail fare, station and airport transfers, selected admissions, and meals. Check taxes and other charges in the booking total. A car-free plan can still involve taxis when luggage or mobility makes them worthwhile. Leave a small amount unallocated for the food stop, exhibition, or neighborhood you discover after arriving.
Make it yours
Useful variations
Return flight from Montréal
Add a final Montréal night after Québec City, making this an eight-day trip, or remove a sightseeing night to preserve a seven-day total. The return train and airport transfer need their own time. A low airfare is only a saving after those costs are included.
A winter city week
Keep the two bases but replace long outdoor stretches with shorter walks and researched indoor visits. Use suitable footwear and current local conditions to decide whether Mount Royal paths and old-town slopes fit your group. Do not reuse the summer walking times unchanged.
More time in Montréal
Add two nights for another neighborhood day and a museum selected around your interests. Leave a separate outing outside the city for a day with its own transport plan; it should not displace the only full day you have in Old Montréal.
FAQ
Common planning questions
Can I visit Montréal and Québec City without a car?
Yes. This itinerary uses VIA Rail between cities and local transport or walking within them. You still need to plan the airport transfers and the journey from each station to your accommodation.
How many nights should I spend in each city?
Three in Montréal and three in Québec City is a balanced first visit. It leaves two full days in each. Add nights if you want several museums, day trips, or a gentler walking pace.
Is this itinerary suitable for travelers who avoid stairs?
It needs adaptation. Mount Royal and Old Québec include slopes and uneven surfaces. Research accessible approaches, choose accommodation carefully, and replace difficult walks. The template’s walking pins do not certify a step-free route.
