Quick answer

The best route for 9 days · 8 nights

Spend three nights in Paris, two in Amboise or Tours, one in Lyon, and two in Nice. Use trains for the long city-to-city moves and rent a car locally for one Loire château day only if needed. Book an open-jaw arrival into Paris and departure from Nice to keep the route moving in one direction.

Nine days cannot cover all of France, but it can connect four very different experiences without retracing the country: Parisian landmarks, Loire châteaux, Lyon’s old town and food culture, and the Mediterranean around Nice.

The route deliberately limits Paris to two full sightseeing days and the Loire to two major châteaux. Lyon is a compact one-night bridge, while Nice receives a full day plus two lighter edges. Rail times and station names still need checking for the exact travel date.

Why this route works

  • The itinerary runs north to south and ends at an international airport, avoiding a return to Paris.
  • Three Paris nights protect two complete city days after an international arrival.
  • Two Loire nights make one proper château day possible without sightseeing with luggage.
  • Lyon breaks the journey to Nice and earns an evening plus morning rather than a rushed station lunch.

Day by day

The complete 9 days itinerary

1

Day 1 · Paris

Arrive in Paris and walk the river islands

Transfer into the city, check in for three nights, and make Île de la Cité and the Latin Quarter the only plan. A flexible river walk absorbs flight delays and gives an immediate sense of the center.

Paris airportHotel check-inÎle de la CitéLatin Quarter

Day 2 · Paris

Historic Paris and the Eiffel Tower area

Reserve Sainte-Chapelle early, walk through Le Marais for lunch and Place des Vosges, then cross the city for a timed Eiffel Tower visit or a free Trocadéro view. Avoid adding another large museum.

Sainte-ChapelleLe MaraisPlace des VosgesEiffel Tower or Trocadéro

Buy Eiffel Tower access only through the official ticket channel and keep Trocadéro as the graceful fallback.

3

Day 3 · Paris

The Louvre, Tuileries, and Montmartre

Use a morning Louvre reservation and select a few departments rather than trying to finish the museum. Walk through the Tuileries afterward, rest, then visit Montmartre in the late afternoon.

Check the Louvre’s current closure day before assigning dates to this template.

4

Day 4 · Amboise

Train to the Loire Valley and explore Amboise

Take a morning train from the correct Paris station toward Tours or Saint-Pierre-des-Corps. Transfer to Amboise, check in for two nights, and visit the royal château only if the arrival is comfortably on time.

Paris has several major stations. The station printed on the ticket is part of the itinerary, not a minor detail.

5

Day 5 · Amboise

Choose two Loire châteaux, not five

Start at Chenonceau, allow time for its galleries and gardens, then continue to Chambord. A local rental car gives control; travelers who prefer not to drive should reserve a small-group tour that clearly lists entry arrangements.

Two estates fill the day once parking, walking, lunch, and the return drive are counted.

6

Day 6 · Lyon

Train to Lyon for old town and dinner

Return any rental car, take the best rail connection to Lyon, and check in for one night. Walk Vieux Lyon and marked public traboules before a reserved bouchon dinner.

Day 7 · Nice

Fourvière, then rail south to Nice

Use the funicular to Fourvière for a short city view, then board the train to Nice. After check-in for two nights, keep the evening to the Promenade des Anglais and Vieux Nice.

FourvièreLyon Part-DieuTrain to NicePromenade des Anglais

Bring food and water for the long train day and avoid a timed Nice attraction after arrival.

8

Day 8 · Nice

Nice market, old town, and a Riviera side trip

Visit Cours Saleya in the morning, climb or ride to Castle Hill, then choose Villefranche-sur-Mer for an easy local-train afternoon. Stay in Nice if beach weather or energy makes another transfer unnecessary.

Day 9 · Departure day

Depart from Nice

Use the tram or an official transfer to Nice Côte d’Azur Airport. Keep the morning empty for an early flight; for a late departure, add only a short seafront breakfast.

Before you go

Make the plan dependable

Book the trip in layers

Secure open-jaw flights, the longest train, and lodging first; then add Louvre, Eiffel Tower, and château tickets around those fixed times.

Check every station name

Paris, Tours, and Lyon each have multiple relevant stations. Leave transfer time based on the exact stations printed on the ticket.

Keep the Loire car local

A one-day local rental can simplify the estates without burdening Paris, Lyon, or Nice with parking. Reserve an automatic well ahead if required.

Treat closure days as route constraints

Museum, market, and château schedules vary. Reassign the template’s calendar days after checking official hours for your dates.

Make it yours

Useful variations

For fewer hotel changes

Drop Lyon and travel from the Loire Valley to Nice with the best connection, adding the freed night to Paris or Nice.

For a no-car Loire visit

Base in Tours, choose a clearly scoped château shuttle or tour, and avoid building a plan around infrequent rural transfers.

For art-first travelers

Add a Paris night for Musée d’Orsay or Centre Pompidou programming and remove the Villefranche side trip.

FAQ

Common planning questions

Is nine days enough for Paris and the French Riviera?

Yes for this highlights route, with two full Paris days and one full Nice day. It is not a leisurely deep dive; add nights if Versailles, Provence villages, or more Riviera towns are priorities.

Do I need a car for this France itinerary?

Only potentially in the Loire Valley. Long-distance trains serve the main route, and Paris, Lyon, and Nice are better without a car. A small-group château tour is the simplest no-car substitute.

Should I buy French train tickets in advance?

Book reserved long-distance services once the itinerary is firm, particularly for the Paris and Nice legs. Compare flexibility and connection time, not only the lowest fare.

Can I add Provence?

Add at least two nights and place them between Lyon and Nice. Substituting a rushed Provence day trip for the only full Nice day weakens both destinations.
