Quick answer

The best route for 8 days · 7 nights

Spend two nights in Dublin without a car, then drive west for two nights in Galway, two in Dingle, and one in Killarney. Use Connemara as the Galway day trip and the Cliffs of Moher as a transfer-day stop. Finish near Shannon rather than driving back across the country solely for a flight when an open-jaw itinerary works.

Eight days is enough for Dublin and a focused stretch of the west coast, but not the whole island. This route protects two-night stays in Galway and Dingle, keeps the car out of central Dublin, and treats narrow-road sightseeing as a full activity rather than empty time between attractions.

The itinerary favors a one-way Dublin-to-Shannon journey. Travelers using round-trip Dublin flights should add a night or replace Killarney with a direct return east; forcing the full western loop and a same-day airport crossing makes the final two days fragile.

Why this route works

  • Dublin comes first so jet lag and city sightseeing happen before the rental-car pickup.
  • Galway receives two nights for one unhurried Connemara day without changing hotels.
  • The Burren and Cliffs of Moher sit naturally on the southbound transfer toward Dingle.
  • Two Dingle nights keep Slea Head Drive separate from the long County Clare transfer.

Day by day

The complete 8 days itinerary

1

Day 1 · Dublin

Arrive in Dublin and follow the river into town

Take an airport bus or official transfer into central Dublin, check in for two nights, and walk the Liffey, Ha’penny Bridge, and nearby lanes. Keep the day unticketed so a delayed flight costs nothing.

Dublin AirportHotel check-inHa’penny BridgeTemple Bar lanes

Do not collect the rental car yet; central parking and left-side city traffic add work without helping the first two days.

2

Day 2 · Dublin

Historic Dublin with two anchor reservations

Start with the Book of Kells Experience, walk through the Georgian center to Dublin Castle, then use a reserved Kilmainham Gaol visit as the afternoon anchor. Leave the evening open for a pub meal and live music away from the busiest strip.

Kilmainham tickets are limited. If they are unavailable, substitute a museum instead of buying from an unofficial seller.

3

Day 3 · Galway

Collect the car and cross Ireland to Galway

Pick up the car on the west side of Dublin when practical and drive toward Galway. Break at Clonmacnoise for the monastic ruins, then park for two nights and explore the Latin Quarter on foot.

Confirm whether the rental is manual or automatic and understand toll payment before leaving the desk.

4

Day 4 · Galway

Connemara without racing the daylight

Drive to Kylemore Abbey, continue to Connemara National Park for a weather-appropriate walk, and pause in Clifden before returning. Skip the exposed upper trail when wind or visibility turns poor.

Navigation times do not include sheep, single-track passing, viewpoints, or weather. Choose two anchors, not six pins.

5

Day 5 · Dingle

The Burren and Cliffs of Moher en route to Dingle

Leave Galway early, cross the Burren, and use an official Cliffs of Moher booking as the day’s main stop. Continue via the Shannon ferry when its timetable fits, then check in for two nights in Dingle.

This is a substantial transfer day. If the ferry timing or weather is poor, use the direct inland route and protect the Dingle arrival.

6

Day 6 · Dingle

Drive the Dingle Peninsula slowly

Follow the signed Slea Head loop clockwise, stopping only in proper pull-offs around Dunquin and the Blasket views. Return to Dingle town with enough time to park the car and enjoy the evening on foot.

The road is used by residents, coaches, farm vehicles, and cyclists. Never stop in the carriageway for a photo.

7

Day 7 · Killarney

Inch Beach and Killarney National Park

Drive east via Inch Beach, then choose a focused Killarney National Park afternoon around Muckross, Torc Waterfall, or a lakeside walk. Skip the Ring of Kerry unless you add another night.

One park cluster is more rewarding than turning this day into another all-day loop behind the wheel.

8

Day 8 · Departure day

Ross Castle and departure

Take a short Ross Castle or lakeside walk only if the flight time allows, then drive to Shannon with buffer for fuel and rental return. For an early flight, spend the previous night nearer the airport.

Before you go

Make the plan dependable

Use open-jaw flights when the price works

Arriving in Dublin and leaving from Shannon protects nearly a day of backtracking. If flights require Dublin both ways, shorten the western route or add a night.

Reserve the scarce tickets first

Secure Kilmainham Gaol, the Book of Kells, and any preferred ferry or lodging before filling in flexible viewpoints.

Plan for narrow roads, not map mileage

Build daylight and photo-stop buffers into every western drive. Avoid late arrivals on unfamiliar rural roads and never let a sightseeing loop dictate unsafe speed.

Carry a waterproof layer every day

Wind and rain can change quickly. Keep one indoor or lower-level alternative for each outdoor day instead of waiting for a perfect forecast.

Make it yours

Useful variations

For a no-car trip

Keep Dublin and Galway, use an organized Connemara or Cliffs day tour, then take the train to Killarney. Drop Dingle unless you can arrange a practical bus or guided connection.

For the Ring of Kerry

Add a second Killarney night. Do not combine the full ring with the drive from Dingle and a national-park afternoon.

For the Aran Islands

Add a Galway night and protect the sailing with a weather buffer rather than squeezing it into the Connemara day.

FAQ

Common planning questions

Is eight days enough for Ireland?

Yes for Dublin and a focused western route. It is not enough for this itinerary plus Belfast, Cork, the Aran Islands, and the full Ring of Kerry without one-night stops and long drives.

Do I need a rental car for this Ireland itinerary?

A car is the practical choice for Connemara, the Burren, Dingle, and Killarney. Keep it out of Dublin and collect it only on departure. A no-car variation is possible with trains and guided day tours, but Dingle becomes harder.

Should I drive the Ring of Kerry or Dingle Peninsula?

With only eight days, choose Dingle Peninsula and use the Killarney day for the national park. Add another Killarney night if the Ring of Kerry is a priority.

Can I return to Dublin on day eight?

You can, but a same-day Killarney-to-Dublin drive is a poor match for an early flight. Add a final Dublin or airport night, or depart from Shannon when flight options allow.
