Quick answer
The best route for 10 days · 9 nights
Spend three nights each in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Krabi. Fly the long domestic legs, keep both flight days light, and make the first Krabi boat outing weather-flexible. This gives you two full days in each region without turning the trip into a daily airport transfer.
Ten days can combine Thailand’s capital, northern culture, and an Andaman coast finish when the trip holds at three bases. The route avoids one-night island hopping and preserves recovery time for heat, jet lag, rain, and transport delays.
Bangkok’s major temples are grouped along the river, Chiang Mai’s old city is paired with a separate mountain and countryside plan, and Krabi keeps one beach day open as a weather backup. Travelers in monsoon or smoke seasons should adjust the regional mix using current official advice.
Why this route works
- Three Bangkok nights protect one landmark day and one neighborhood day after a long-haul arrival.
- Chiang Mai has two full days: one for the old city and Doi Suthep, one for the countryside.
- Krabi receives a flexible final day so a canceled boat outing does not erase the coast experience.
- Domestic flights replace two very long overland transfers while remaining honest half-day itinerary events.
Day by day
The complete 10 days itinerary
Day 1 · Bangkok
Arrive in Bangkok and use the river for orientation
Transfer from Suvarnabhumi through the official rail or taxi system, check in for three nights, and take a short Chao Phraya ferry ride only if energy allows. Keep the first evening close to the hotel.
Use the official taxi queue and meter process; ignore unsolicited transport offers inside arrivals.
Day 2 · Bangkok
Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and Wat Arun
Start at the Grand Palace near opening, walk to Wat Pho, rest over lunch, then cross the river ferry to Wat Arun. This geographic cluster minimizes midday transit and keeps the three major sites in one coherent day.
Follow official dress rules, carry water, and buy tickets only at authorized entrances.
Day 3 · Bangkok
Markets, design, and neighborhood Bangkok
See Pak Khlong Talat early, use the Jim Thompson House as an indoor midday visit, and finish with a late Talat Noi walk. Avoid crossing the whole city for a floating market on this short stay.
Day 4 · Chiang Mai
Fly north to Chiang Mai
Confirm whether the flight leaves from BKK or DMK, allow Bangkok traffic time, and fly to Chiang Mai. Check in for three nights and walk the Old City only after the hottest part of the day.
Bangkok’s two airports are not interchangeable; verify the code before planning the transfer.
Day 5 · Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai Old City and Doi Suthep
Visit Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh in the morning, break during the heat, then travel with a licensed driver to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. Return before dinner rather than stacking a night tour.
Day 6 · Chiang Mai
A responsible countryside day
Choose a small-group outing to Mae Kampong, a farm, craft community, or national-park area with clear local-benefit and animal-welfare standards. Return for whichever Chiang Mai market operates that evening.
Avoid venues offering elephant riding, performances, forced bathing, or direct handling presented as conservation.
Day 7 · Ao Nang
Fly south to Krabi
Take a nonstop Chiang Mai–Krabi flight when schedules allow, transfer to Ao Nang, and check in for three nights. Keep the day to a beach walk and early dinner; do not attach a boat departure to the flight.
Day 8 · Ao Nang
Railay and a sea-conditions-first island outing
Take an authorized local boat to Railay, walk to Phra Nang, and add a licensed island outing only when sea and weather conditions are suitable. Confirm the final practical boat back to your base.
The operator—not a fixed checklist—should adjust the route for wind, tide, marine closures, and crowding.
Day 9 · Ao Nang
Keep one Krabi day flexible
Use this as the backup for yesterday’s boat plan or take a completely open beach morning. Visit Krabi Town for the evening market only if its operating day and transport make sense.
Day 10 · Departure day
Depart from Krabi
Transfer to Krabi Airport with margin. If the international trip uses a separate Bangkok ticket, protect a much longer connection or spend the final night near the international departure airport.
Before you go
Make the plan dependable
Check season by region
Andaman rain, northern smoke, and extreme heat do not follow one nationwide pattern. Review current official guidance for all three bases before buying nonrefundable travel.
Treat flight days as travel days
Airport transfers, security, baggage, and hotel access make a short domestic flight a half-day event. The template deliberately avoids major reservations after landing.
Dress and behave for active temples
Carry shoulder-and-knee-covering clothing, remove shoes where directed, keep voices low, and never climb on religious structures for a photo.
Choose wildlife experiences carefully
Prefer observation at distance and transparent welfare policies. Avoid rides, performances, forced contact, and venues that guarantee close interaction.
Make it yours
Useful variations
For an overnight train
Replace the Bangkok–Chiang Mai flight with a reserved sleeper and keep the Chiang Mai arrival morning light. Do not count a poor night’s sleep as a full sightseeing day.
For history-first travelers
Add a Bangkok night for Ayutthaya and remove one Krabi night only if beach time is secondary.
For rainforest time
Add two or three nights for Khao Sok between the north and Krabi rather than forcing it into the flexible beach day.
FAQ
Common planning questions
Is ten days enough for Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Krabi?
Yes. Three nights in each base creates two usable full days per region. Adding another island or northern base would turn too much of the trip into transfers.
Should I fly or take the train to Chiang Mai?
Flying saves time; the overnight train can be an experience if you reserve a comfortable berth and keep the arrival morning light. Either option fits, but do not add a full sightseeing schedule immediately after the sleeper.
Is Ao Nang or Railay a better base?
Ao Nang offers simpler road transfers, more services, and flexible boat departures. Railay is more atmospheric but boat-dependent. This template uses Ao Nang and treats Railay as a full outing.
Do I need to book island tours in advance?
Reserve a reputable licensed operator once conditions are reasonably clear, but keep the exact day flexible. Weather, sea state, and marine closures should override a prepaid checklist.
